The world of the celebrity is a wacky place. With the paparazzi round every corner waiting to snap Lindsey Lohan looking tired or Britney Spears looking dumped, it’s no wonder our celeb idols want to blend in to the crowd and become invisible. Or not. With lives that hit the headlines daily, it’s no wonder some of the glitterati choose to drive ostentatious vehicles. From funnyman Jim Carey in his mercedez-benz S-Class (limo length of course) to rapper JaRule in his eye-catching, lime-green Lamborghini Murcielago, the celebrity world is rife with crazy cars.
Some celebrities are famous for their car collections rather than their especially strange automobile choices. Jay Leno is well known for his Big Dog Garage full of wonders including Bugattis, Corvettes and even his very first car, a 1955 Buick. Fellow comedian, Jerry Seinfield has a large collection of Porsches to his name. Hip-hop queen, Missy Elliot has a small collection including an Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, a Rolls Royce Phantom and a Lamborghini Gallardo.
A few celebrities like to show their environmentally friendly side and the influx of electric and hybrid cars over the past decade was sure to take Hollywood by storm. Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Leonardo Di Caprio and Julia Roberts have all turned their backs on gas-guzzlers by buying the increasingly trendy Toyota Prius. The Prius benefits from looking like an ordinary car despite its hybrid status. Hybrid just wasn’t ozone-layer-orientated enough though for a certain Mr. George Clooney who drives a tiny 2-seater electric Tango 600 (no room for the rest of the Ocean’s 11 team, that’s for sure).
For some celebs, it’s simply a case of bigger is better. Pint-sized songstress, Fergie (of Black Eyed Peas fame) drives an H2 Hummer and Madonna and Samuel L. Jackson carve up the streets in colossal Maybach 57s. Nicole Richie goes big the British way with a Bentley Continental. Charlize Theron also chooses to go the Brit route to big cars with a classic Range Rover.
Sometimes, a modern automobile just isn’t kooky enough for today’s celebrity. More and more of today’s stars are opting for one of the classics to make that retro statement. In her vintage MG, supermodel Kate Moss cuts a dash on the streets of London – very Austin Powers! Also sticking to the best of British is Grey’s Anatomy star, Patrick Dempsey in his stunning Jaguar E-Type. Who drives a 7500cc V8 1960s Excalibur? Only the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarrzenegger. Based on the 1920s Mercedes, he drives one head-turning machine. Good Charlotte band-member, Benji Madden certainly turns heads in his sci-fi style 1950 Ford Shoebox and if it’s American muscle you’re after, you can’t beat Mr. Matthew McConaughey in his Chevy Camaro Z28. Finally, ‘The Body’ herself, Elle MacPherson, has possibly found her automobile equivalent. She drives a sleek and timeless Aston Martin DB5 from 1964. One of under a hundred left in the world, like its owner, it’s practically unique.
The A-list wouldn’t be where they are without a few personality quirks and it’s good to see those quirks reflected in their unusual cars.
